It has a paper faced fiberglass appearance. I hope its fiberglass and not something else. Never heard of black
fiberglass however. Any thoughts?

It is called “rock wool” and is an early version of fiberglass insulation. Do not get this stuff on your skin! It will cause you to break out with glass splinters…not good!

It is rock wool.My old house has this also.It is made from steel slag.Over time it compresses and has little insulation value.Just place fiberglass insulation over it and don’t worry about it.It’s not a problem.
