Cardboard egg cartons tacked or stapled to the walls and/or ceiling will do the trick. You can get these at many restaurants that purchase eggs in bulk cartons.

The best way to soundproof is using QuietRock soundproofing drywall – it scores, snaps and hangs just like regular drywall and you can hang it over existing walls. If you want a lower cost solution, QuietGlue Pro, a sound damping glue, placed between two layers of regular gypsum board will also achieve good results. Check out these products, http://www.quietrock.com and http://www.quietrock.com/soundproof-products/damping-glue.html

You might want to check out acoustic ceiling tile and use it on the walls too. Whatever you use, just make sure it’s not flamable so you do not create a hazardous condition.

You can DAMPEN sound by covering the walls with quilts, or other heavy coverings. You CAN’T soundproof the room cheaply.

Could try those foam pads you throw on top of your mattress.

ACOUSTIC insulation but its not cheap, its a foam material that looks like pyramids pointing into the inside of the room. if on the cheap the egg cartons will work . Its all about breaking up the sound waves and any irregular surface will work.
